Liz Truss elected new Conservative leader and PM
Liz Truss has been announced as the successor to Boris Johnson becoming the new Conservative leader and Prime Minister.
The result of the Conservative Party leadership contest was announced just after 12.30 pm with the winner to take up office on Tuesday.
In a break with tradition, the next Tory leader will be appointed by the Queen at Balmoral Castle, rather than at Buckingham Palace.
Truss won 81,326 votes compared to Rishi Sunak’s share of 60,399 votes.
Brady adds there was a turnout of 82.6%
