OZLEM ISIK INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION RESEARCHER, TEACHER AND AUTHOR The United Kingdom is located on the continent of Europe, and includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The country is a sovereign state whose capital is London. The name "England" is derived from the old English name "Englaland", which means "land of the Angles". The Angles were one of the Germanic tribes that settled in Great Britain during the Early Middle Ages. The name of London, on the other hand, is derived from a word first attested in Latinised form, as Londinium. There is a long history of mythicising etymologies, such as the twelfth-century Historia Regum Britanniae asserting that the city's name is derived from the name of King Lud who once controlled the city. Have you ever heard of the term "pommy or pom"? The term pommy, often shortened to pom, in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa denotes a person of British (English, Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Irish) origin. England is famous for many things-David Beckham, Fish and Chips, Big Ben, Red Buses, black cabs, Oasis, Blur, the Beatles, London and tea. Windsor Castle is the oldest royal residence still in use. England is also famous for its educational institutes. There is another very interesting fact about the Big Ben. Contrary to popular belief that Big Ben refers to the world famous clock, it is actually the name of the thirteen ton bell. The tower itself is known as St. Stephen's Tower.
